Grand Traverse Distillery’s Ole George 100% Straight Rye Whiskey was awarded its third set of medals from the American Distilling Institute’s panel of judges at this year’s Craft Spirits Competition, held in March, in Louisville, KY.
“We are honored to again be recognized by such an esteemed organization as the American Distilling Institute,” says Grand Traverse Distillery President Kent Rabish, who also serves as Vice President of the Michigan Craft Distillers Association. “Michigan continues to garner national attention for its quality products and we’re happy to be part of the growth of this industry.”
Ole George was awarded “Silver – Best in Class “as well as “Gold – Best in Category” for a Craft Rye Whiskey. Landis Rabish, Lead Distiller, was on hand to accept the awards for the Distillery and was thrilled to have crafted such a popular and award winning Rye Whiskey.
“Ole George” Whiskey is distilled in a traditional fashion from a 100% rye mash bill and is bottled at 93 proof. Prior to prohibition, Americans drank rye whiskey – with its unique character that no other grain can provide, as the rye imparts a spicy flavor. “Ole George” Whiskey is made in small batches and is double-distilled in GTD’s copper pot still. It bottled straight from the barrel and is not chill-filtered, which can remove flavor from the whiskey. The goal with “Ole George” Whiskey is to let the unique flavor of the rye come through.
Since opening in June of 2007, GTD has prided itself as a “Grain to Bottle” craft distillery which supports the state’s active agriculture industry. It is the only distillery in Michigan to have every single Whiskey, Vodka and Gin we produce “Pure Michigan” certified.
Grand Traverse Distillery has added another accolade to its impressive award-wining portfolio with the recent “Best of Category – Gold Medal” honor in the Aged Rye Whiskey category for “Ole George”. The award was presented in early April in Colorado by the American Distilling Institute at its 7th Annual Judging of Artisan American Spirits. The Traverse City-based distillery has won awards for its various vodka brands – this is its first award in the whiskey category.
Grand Traverse Distillery operates tasting rooms throughout the state, including three in Traverse City (the original location on Industrial Circle, in The Village at Grand Traverse Commons and a new location on Front Street downtown), River Place Shops in downtown Frankenmuth, a seasonal tasting room in Leland on the Leelanau Peninsula, not far from historic Fishtown, and a new location at the Downtown Market in Grand Rapids.

Grand Traverse Distillery Brings Artisan Spirits to the Grand Rapids Downtown Market
Grand Rapids Downtown Market, a destination for local food innovation, education and experimentation, today announced Grand Traverse Distillery, maker of craft spirits including vodka, gin, rum, whiskey and bourbon, will open a tasting room at the Downtown Market.
Founded by Kent Rabish in 2007, Grand Traverse Distillery is based in Traverse City, and is the largest micro-distillery in Michigan. In his commitment to using local ingredients, Rabish uses corn, wheat and rye grown at Send Brothers Farm, just nine miles northeast of the distillery’s production facilities.
“Grand Traverse Distilleries is among the very few using the ‘grain-to-bottle’ method, which means we start with fresh, local rye, corn and wheat, and combined it with pure glacial water to create our artisan spirits,” said Rabish. “Single batch, handmade, one-at-a-time is how we bring our spirits to market, and we are excited to be the first local distiller to open a tasting room in Grand Rapids.”
The Grand Traverse Distillery Tasting Room at the Downtown Market will feature spirits to taste and buy by the bottle. The tasting room will also offer local products and mixers that best complement their spirits, such as syrups, peanuts and pickles, as well as clothing, glassware and barrels for those who want to age their own spirits.
“While artisan spirits are growing rapidly, Grand Traverse Distillery is committed to the re-emerging art of craft distillation, and we are thrilled to add an incredibly popular, ultra-premium Michigan brand to the Downtown Market,” said Mimi Fritz, president and CEO of the Downtown Market. “They are a perfect addition to our space and mission.”
Grand Traverse Distillery will continue to make all of its products at its Traverse City facility. The spirits also are available at tasting rooms in Leland, on Traverse City’s Front Street and in Frankenmuth, with another tasting room coming soon at Black Star Farms.
Construction on the space will begin this month, and the tasting room will open in December.

Grand Traverse Distillery’s “Ole George” Aged Rye Whiskey Named “Best of Category – Gold Medal”

“We are honored to be recognized for our aged rye whiskey by such an esteemed organization,” says GTD Owner Kent Rabish. “Michigan as a whole was represented on several levels at the competition, which reinforces our growing industry’s overall goal of producing quality craft beverages.”
Since opening in June of 2007, GTD has prided itself as a “Grain to Bottle Artisan Distiller” which supports the state’s active agriculture industry and now boasts the “Pure Michigan” seals on most of its products.
Hand-crafted in small batches, GTD products include four vodkas (True North Vodka, Chocolate Vodka, Cherry Vodka and Wheat Vodka) and five whiskey products including the double-barreled Ole George 100% Straight Rye Whiskey (93 proof), Bourbon (92 proof), a 2nd Straight Rye Whiskey (90 proof), White Dog – an un-aged 100% Corn Moonshine Whiskey (80 proof); and Cherry Whiskey (80 proof), as well as a soon-to-be-released gin.
GTD distributes or True North Vodka, Cherry Vodka, Wheat Vodka and White Dog Whiskey to more than 900 retail outlets and 400 restaurants/bars in Michigan via Great Lakes Wine and Spirits. All of the other GTD spirits are available at one of four tasting rooms – including two in Traverse City (the original location on Industrial Circle and in The Village at Grand Traverse Commons), River Place Shops in downtown Frankenmuth, and in Leland on the Leelanau Peninsula, not far from historic Fishtown. A new tasting room is schedule to open during the summer of 2013 in Novi.
Earlier this year, Grand Traverse Distillery was recognized as one of the 2013 “Michgian 50 Companies to Watch,” – an awards program sponsored by the Edward Lowe Foundation and presented by Michigan Celebrates Small Business and has been selected as 2013 Top 10 Small Business by the Traverse City Chamber on Commerce.

Grand Traverse Distillery Opens Frankenmuth Tasting Room - Expands Locations to Four
“The Frankenmuth store is in an excellent location to accommodate our customers who live in Southeastern Michigan,” says owner Kent Rabish. “We are very excited to be finally opening this tasting room and introduce our award-winning products to a whole new marketplace!”
Visitors to the Frankenmuth tasting room will find GTD’s Wheat Vodka, True North Vodka and Cherry Flavored Vodka – as well as a variety of whiskey products like Ole George 100% Straight Rye Whiskey, Bourbon, a 2nd Straight Rye Whiskey, and a 100% Corn Whiskey. More varieties of whiskey are in the works.
“We will also be offering a whiskey blending service, where we can custom blend any whiskey to order for a customer, which they then take home along with a mini charred oak aging barrel to begin aging their own whiskey at home,” Kent says. “We offer this in Traverse City, but now we have a location convenient for people in Southeastern Michigan.”
Last summer, owner Rabish opened a location in Leland on the Leelanau Peninsula, not far from historic Fishtown and is also sharing a tasting room with Black Star Farms in The Village at Grand Traverse Commons in Traverse City. The original distillery and tasting room is located in Traverse City.
Michigan has established itself for its first-class wineries and breweries, and the craft distilling industry is now garnering attention. When you purchase these Michigan beverages, you not only support the local businesses but Michigan agriculture as well.
“We have choices now that were not available just a few years ago and we can choose to consume delicacies produced by our neighbors,” says Landis Rabish, President at GTD. “This is a revolution that has only just begun. It is gratifying to see that Michigan has not languished in the backwaters of this change, but instead is leading the way. Why buy produce from afar and ship it around the globe when we can grow it ourselves. Supporting products that are produced locally just makes sense for so many reasons.”
As a Michigan distiller, using locally-grown grains is a top priority. As such, Grand Traverse Distillery is proud to support Michigan agriculture. The company has purchased more than 750,000 pounds of rye, wheat and corn from local farmers since it began distilling its hand-crafted spirits in 2007.
“What people are discovering is that supporting local does not have to come at the expense of quality,” Landis says. “Crafting local spirits is not a new idea. Before prohibition, America had hundreds of distilleries around the country, all using local grains to produce mainly whiskey. It seems what is old is new again.”
Hand-crafted in small batches, more than 4000 cases of True North Vodka, Cherry Vodka and Wheat Vodka have sold per year. The vodkas can be found in over 900 retail outlets and 400 restaurants/bars in Michigan and is distributed in Michigan by Great Lakes Wine & Spirits.
GTD has earned multiple “Gold Medal” honors in the International Review of Spirits (2007 and 2009) and A “Gold Medal” in the San Francisco World Spirits Competition (2008). In the 2009 and 2010, Wine Enthusiast Magazine selected True North Vodka as one of the six best vodkas in the world.

Grand Traverse Distillery Ranked Among Top 50 Spirits by Wine Enthusiast Magazine for Second Consecutive Year
For the second consecutive year, includes True North Vodka made by Grand Traverse Distillery – Northern Michigan's original vodka micro-distillery, based in Traverse City has been named to the “Top 50 Spirits” list published by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. This distinguished list, which appears in the December 2010 edition, reflects an excitement and diversity of elite brand in each of 13 categories. It is compiled by the editors of Wine Enthusiast Magazine along with new spirits taster, Kara Newman. Only three other unflavored vodkas were identified; True North being the only one from the Great Lakes Region.
In the listing for True North Vodka, which ranked 90-95 as Superb/Highest Recommended, editors wrote: “Very nice bouquet consisting of pleasant aromas of bread dough, black pepper, new leather and toasted grain. The grainy toastiness and spiciness continue at palate entry; mid-palate shows a touch of spirit heat in line with the inherent peppery quality. Finishes with tastes of fudge, egg cream, toasted wheat and toasted rye bread.”
“Last year we were elated to be listed as one of the top unflavored vodkas in the country, says Kent Rabish, who began distributing the True North Vodka in June 2007. “Making that list for a second consecutive year reinforces our dedication to crafting world-class vodka here in Michigan, which is recognized and ranked on a national scale.”
The original True North Vodka has been ranked a “Gold Medal” spirit by the Beverage Tasting Institute (BTI) twice (92 - 2009 / 92 - 2007) as part of its annual International Review of Spirits Competition. It also received a “Gold Medal” rating in 2008 at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, where Pacult was Director of Judging.
True North is super-premium vodka that celebrates the natural gifts abundant to Michigan's 45th parallel. Ingredients originate from the beautiful Grand Traverse region, where the rich soils produce the quality rye and the crystal clear glacial waters blend to create this premium vodka. With these quality ingredients and the triple distillation process, each True North Vodka is truly one of a kind.
As a Michigan distiller, using Michigan grown grains is a top priority for the distillery. As such, Grand Traverse Distillery is proud to support Michigan agriculture and has purchased over 300,000 pounds of rye, wheat and corn from local farmers since it began distilling its hand-crafted spirits.
Hand-crafted in small batches, more than 4000 cases of True North Vodka, Grand Cherry Vodka and Wheat Vodka have collectively sold in just the past 30 months. It can be found in over 800 retail outlets and 250 restaurants/bars in Michigan and is distributed in Michigan by Great Lakes Wine & Spirits.

Grand Traverse Distillery Named Among Top 50 Spirits of 2009 by Wine Enthusiast Magazine
Wine Enthusiast magazine has released its 2009 “Top 50 Spirits” list which includes True North Vodka made by Grand Traverse Distillery – Northern Michigan's original vodka micro-distillery, based in Traverse City. The list, compiled by F. Paul Pacult – an esteemed spirits evaluator and editor of The Spirit Journal, singles out only six vodkas, along with other spirits such as gin, rum, whiskey and tequila. “Each year, I arrive at this point trying to whittle down the year’s finest 50 spirits from among all those that received high ratings reviewed in the Spirits Buying Guides,” Pacult wrote in his introduction in WE. “The increase in higher ratings is not, I assure you, due to me becoming more lenient or indulgent with age. Just the opposite is true, my peers tell me, if anything, I’ve grown even more demanding after 20 years as a spirits evaluator.”
In his listing for True North Vodka, which ranked 90-95 as Superb/Highly Recommended, Pacult wrote: “Very nice bouquet consisting of pleasant aromas of bread dough, black pepper, new leather and toasted grain. The grainy toastiness and spiciness continue at palate entry; mid-palate shows a touch of spirit heat in line with the inherent peppery quality. Finishes with tastes of fudge, egg cream, toasted wheat and toasted rye bread.”
“We are elated to be listed as one of the top six vodkas in the country,” says Kent Rabish, who began distributing the True North Vodka in June 2007. “For someone of Pacult’s caliber to critique and rate this as among the best of the best is one of the greatest ways we can think to end 2009 and toast the New Year.”

Grand Traverse Distillery Scores Medals at Prestigious International Competition
Grand Traverse Distillery, Northern Michigan's original vodka micro-distillery, recently received accolades for its various True North Vodkas from the Beverage Tasting Institute (BTI) at its 2009 International Review of Spirits Competition earlier this fall in Chicago. This is the largest and most prestigious annual spirits competition in the United States. The BTI gave Grand Traverse Distillery’s new Wheat Vodka (80 proof / $21.97) a gold medal rating of 93 in the “Unflavored Vodka” category – one of the highest ranking issued East of the Mississippi. The original True North Vodka (80 proof / $29.99) received a 92 gold medal rating in the same category, while the Grand Cherry Vodka (80 proof / $29.99) ranked in with 87 points for a silver medal rating in the “Flavored Vodka” category.
“We couldn’t be happier with our BTI rankings this year – including the gold medal for our new Wheat Vodka,” says Kent Rabish, who began distributing the True North Vodka in June 2007. “Each of our three product lines have now been recognized by leaders in the industry for being among the top micro-distilled vodkas in the country.”
The International Review of Spirits is the most authoritative, influential and respected annual spirits competition in the United States. Major and boutique spirits producers and importers from around the world participate in the competitions each year.
The online reviews for the Grand Traverse Distillery line includes:
• Wheat Vodka: “Clear. Mild aromas of graham crackers, dried fruit, and custard have a faint spicy edge and follow through silky, smooth entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with delicate anise, dusty grain, and mossy stone notes. Finishes with smooth, talc and mint water accented fade. A very tasty and smooth vodka for every application.”
• True North Vodka: “Clear. Interesting, delicate aromas of earthy mint leaf, dried citrus, white chocolate, and baklava follows through on a soft, satiny entry to a dryish medium body follows through on with excellent smoothness and balance. Finishes with a sweet cream, mint tea, and talc accented fade. Unique honeyed mintiness will make for fascinating cocktails.”
• Grand Cherry Vodka: “Clear. Bold aromas of artisanal maraschino cherries have a distinct chocolate marzipan cookie note and follow through on a supple, satiny entry to a dryish, glycerous medium-to-full with a tingling peppery spice accent. Finishes with a crisp, drying and white pepper, cocoa-dusted cherry skin, and mineral fade. Great cherry aromas, but rather faint on the palate and prickly on the finish; nevertheless, this should mix very well and pop in cocktails.”
Founded in 1981, BTI is recognized as one of America’s premier, independent, alcoholic beverage review organizations by leaders of the beverage industry such as the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Business 2.0, BusinessWeek, CNBC, the BBC, theStreet.com and numerous other consumer and trade publications. Millions of consumers look to BTI's fair and impartial reviews on Tastings.com when making decisions regarding the purchase of spirits.

Award Winning Grand Traverse Distillery Branches Out Into Greater Chicago Market with True North Vodkas

(TRAVERSE CITY, Mich) – Grand Traverse Distillery, Michigan’s newest micro-distillery, has expanded its placement in restaurants and retail outlets to include the greater Chicago area. The True North Vodka and True North Cherry flavored vodka will be distributed through Maxwell Street Trading Company in Addison, IL.
“In addition to the retail properties – such as Sam’s Wine & Spirits and Binny’s – we also expect to place our premium vodka in the finest restaurants and bars throughout Chicago,” says Kent Rabish, who began Grand Traverse Distillery in 2005 and serves as the resident Vodkaologist. “We hope large chains, such as Meijer and Sam’s Club that carry our products in Michigan, will extend them to the Illinois market as well.”
Since 1999, Maxwell Street Trading Company has strived to bring retailers throughout the Chicago area an impressive portfolio of boutique and hard-to-find hand-crafted wine and spirits.
Since being released in June 2007, Grand Traverse Distillery’s True North Vodka has earned two Gold Medal distinctions. The first being an “exceptional” ranking of 92 points at the 2007 International Review of Spirits Competition in Chicago and the most recent at the 2008 San Francisco World Spirits Competition – considered the most prestigious competition of its kind in the country. True North Cherry Flavored Vodka received a Bronze Medal during this year’s San Francisco competition as well.
“Receiving awards from these esteemed international competitions within our first year is real validation that we’re on the right track,” Rabish says. “We’ve always believed we were producing one of the finest premium vodkas. Based on the results from these competitions, the judges believe so as well.”
