Hudsonville Fairgrounds will play host to more than 40 of West Michigan’s best, and newest breweries during the 2nd Annual Beer City Springfest, on Saturday, May 2. Gates open at Noon for VIP ticket holders (1pm to the general public), with the festival running until 6pm. This epic day will be filled with Michigan-made libations, as well as food, games and live entertainment.
Last year’s inaugural event saw more than 2000 individuals join in the festivities; this year’s capacity is set at 2500 with all proceeds benefitting local veterans.
“This year’s Springfest will once again showcase the talents of West Michigan best brewers,” says event organizer Joe Boyer. “We’ll welcome those who have achieved worldwide recognition as the best in the industry, as well as almost a dozen new breweries to the area.”
Many local brewers and producers will be on hand to describe their hand-crafted products and techniques used to create the refreshing Spring flavors. In all, some 200 beers will be available for sampling, along with local spirits, cider, wine and mead.
A variety of food options will also be available, including selections from Standard Pizza from Rockford; Low and Slow BBQ from Saginaw; and RnR from Hudsonville.
“We had so much fun last year, this is just a great way to meet some of the new brewers, try some new beers, and I still hear about how good the prime rib was last year,” Boyer says. ”Everyone is so friendly, strangers walk right up, and describe the best beer they have tried, like I’ve known them for years, many become great friends, I just love the people who come to these events.”
A VIP ticket for the Beer City Springfest gets attendees in at Noon and includes 18 sample tokens (3 ounces each). General admission ticket holders are admitted at 1pm, with 12 sample tokens. Tickets are on sale now at www.beercityfestivals.com. All attendees (including designated drivers) must be 21 with valid ID to be admitted into the festival grounds. Designated driver tickets are available at the door for $5.
Everyone who buys tickets online before April 1st is automatically entered to win a special VIP weekend that includes a deluxe suite in a local hotel, 2-personal brewery tours, hoodies and T-shirts for the event, transportation to and from the festival, and meals.
Parking at the fairgrounds is free. Shuttle transportation is available through the ticketing site for $20 per person and includes a round trip ride from 250 Seward Ave. (Dash Lot #9) on one of the New Salem party busses. 70th Annual Grand Rapids Boat Show Reports Impressive Crowds, Sales & Dealer Satisfaction
Organizers, attendees and exhibitors at the 70th Annual Grand Rapids Boat Show, which was held last week at DeVos Place, are all reporting positive feedback and touting the fact that Michigan boating is back! A West Michigan tradition since 1946, the Grand Rapids Boat Show is Michigan’s longest running boat show.
ShowSpan Inc., which produces the show—in addition to 14 others throughout Michigan and Milwaukee—said just under 25,000 guests came through the doors between February 18-22 to check out more than 400 boats from some 100 manufacturers and 40 dealers, spread out over a five acre indoor showroom.
“The 70th anniversary of the Grand Rapids Boat Show was spectacular…..just what the boating families needed in the midst of this arctic freeze, it was truly summertime at DeVos Place as every aspect of the boating lifestyle came to life,” says Henri Boucher, Show Producer. “The dealers and manufacturers showed the newest products for summer fun and the largest crowd of ten years came to check it all out.”
According to the Secretary of State, Michigan currently ranks 4th in nation for the number of registered watercraft, with 898,289 as of February, 2015. Michigan's registered boaters spend $873 million on trips during the relatively short boating season. Overall, recreational boating contributes about $2 billion annually to Michigan’s economy. Tourism as a whole is a $20+ billion industry in Michigan.
“The weekend traffic was fabulous and the buyers were there,” says Liz Carney, President of Grand Bay Marine in Traverse City and Charlevoix, who this year featured the Queen of the Show—a 42-foot Regal Sport Coupe. “We were thrilled with the interest and actual sales. It’s going to be a fabulous year!”
The National Marine Manufacturer’s Association says that in 2013, the latest data year available, Michigan ranked #4 in total new marine expenditures (new boats, engines, trailers, and marine accessories) with $678 million. This was an increase of 5% over 2012. There are approximately 1,404 boating businesses that create about 16,670 direct boating industry jobs in Michigan.
“We are thrilled to have exhibited in a show where everyone who stopped by to see our boats was excited and looking forward to the upcoming boating season,” says Rick Venner of Walstrom Marine in Harbor Springs. “Not once did I hear anyone talking about the poor economy, fuel prices or politics, instead the atmosphere was positive. Michigan boating is back!”
In addition to the variety of boats, the Grand Rapids Boat Show also featured accessories, services, destinations, educational opportunities and various entertainment elements throughout the weekend.
“We have been involved with the show since 2013, and it is obvious that it has grown each year by adding more exhibits to both the business of boating and to appeal to a family atmosphere,” says Elek Hutchinson, Commodore of the Michigan Hydroplane Racing Association. “I have not seen so many kids at a boat show as I did this year—it was wonderful! It's nice to know that groups such as ShowSpan are promoting to the youth of America, a necessity to grow an ever-evolving industry.”
ShowSpan Inc., held its first show in 1946 and today hosts 14 the state’s largest and most recognized consumer shows in Grand Rapids, East Lansing, Novi and Milwaukee.
“In a few weeks, the 70th annual partner to the Boat Show—the Ultimate Sport Show-Grand Rapids—comes to DeVos Place (March 19-22), featuring more summer fun for all outdoorsmen and women,” Boucher says. “People will find everything from fishing and hunting to taxidermy and morels. And, for the 70th anniversary, the Lumberjacks are back!”

3rd Annual Arts & Eats Tour Offers Pure Michigan Autumn Experiences - October 19-20
Check out the magnificent fall colors during the 3rd Annual Arts & Eats – a Southwest Michigan back roads art, food and farm tour, October 19-20. This free, self-guided driving tour collectively features more than 55 artist studios, eateries serving locally-grown food and farms that feature the best in Michigan specialty farm products. These venues, some of which are not normally open to the public, welcome visitors from 10am to 5pm each day.
As a kick-off to the tour weekend, New Holland Brewing Company co-owner and Beervangelist Fred Bueltmann will share insights about the culture of beer, food and entertaining from his new book, Beervangelist’s Guide to the Galaxy. The free program will take place on Thursday, October 18 from 7-8pm at the Old Mill Place, 717 E. Bridge Street in Plainwell (above the Old Mill Brewpub on the east end of town).
“Arts and Eats is becoming the go-to getaway mid-October weekend event for travelers and locals alike,” says event co-founder Ginger Hentz and District 13 Coordinator - Michigan State University (MSU) Extension. “People travel with their friends, families take their kids to the farms to pet the animals and everyone has a good time learning about the area’s rich agricultural and arts communities, which are economic drivers to our local economy. Plus it is hard to beat a drive down a quiet, rural road when the trees are decked out in their full autumn regalia.”
Participants on the tour are encouraged to request an “Arts and Eats Passport” from any of the sites they visit. By collecting just six stamps, tour-goers can be entered to win one of dozens of great prizes donated by the artists, farmers and eateries. The more passports filled, the more chances to win.
ARTS: Visit galleries, studios and central venues to watch local painters, potters, photographers, sculptors and other artisans in action. Some farms – those that raise fiber-producing animals like alpacas and sheep – provide additional touring opportunities. Works are available for sale as well.
EATS: Explore farms where produce is grown, livestock is raised and artisanal foods are made. Then, stop by area farm/field-to-table restaurants to savor the bounty of the season. Participating restaurants feature special menu items using local products, with chefs using their creative culinary talents to pull together some fabulous menu items for the event.
In addition to the individual tour stops, four “Central Venues” are set up to house additional artist and serve as information stations for visitors. These locations include Gilmore Car Museum, Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, Hasting Fourth Annual Downtown Sculpture Exhibit and Bay Pointe Inn (Arts and Eats Headquarters).
The Interactive Public Art is a returning special event during the tour weekend. Aspiring artists and tour travelers can leave their mark on this year’s event by helping fill up two large canvases through a joint artistic expression. Stop by to paint in Plainwell at the Fannie Pell Park on Saturday, October 19 or the Gilmore car Museum on Sunday, October 20 (10am to 3pm each day). Both completed works of art will be given to the tour, so everyone may enjoy them for years to come.
New this year is “A Taste of Arts and Eats Wine & Cheese Bus Tour” presented by the Thornapple Arts Council. Here, visitors can board a bus and tour select stops along the tour route, while enjoying wine from Glass Creek Winery and cheese from local producers. The bus leaves downtown Hastings on Saturday at noon, returning at 6pm. The cost is $25 per person; space is limited and reservations are required. For more information on this tour option, or to reserve a seat, call 269-945-2002.
Planning partners: Allegan County Tourist Council, Barry County Tourism Council, Gilmore Car Museum, Hastings Public Library, Michigan State University (MSU) Extension, Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, Promote Michigan, Thornapple Arts Council and Wayland Downtown.

Traverse Tall Ship Company Adds "Scout" to its Northern Michigan Maritime Fleet

Traverse Tall Ship Company is proud to welcome a new vessel to its fleet in Traverse City. Scout – a classic Cabo Rico 38 XL – offers a luxurious private cruising experience for up to six (6) people on Grand Traverse Bay. Excursions, ranging from three (3) to nine (9) hours, are personalized to meet the needs of the guests.
“Guests can kick back or jump in and learn how to sail,” says Captain Dave McGinnis, owner of Traverse Tall Ship Company. “We want guests to think of this vessel as their personal yacht during the time they’re on board and we’re ready to deliver the utmost in personal service for those who choose to spend their day with us.”
Built in 1988 on a mountain site in Costa Rica, this lively cutter combines vintage design lines with modern construction technology accented with extensive teak woodwork. From her graceful clipper bow and wood deck trim to a stunning symphony of honey-colored teak (all sustainably plantation grown) below decks she will take your breath away. Brainchild of legendary naval architect W. I. B. Crealock, this vessel has won a reputation for legendary soft motion and stout offshore performance.
“A sail aboard Scout is perfect for special occasions such as proposals, wedding ceremonies, anniversaries, birthdays, business meetings, or just as a way to treat family and friends to a true Northern Michigan experience,” Captain Dave says. “Whether sipping a drink under the shade of the cockpit Bimini top lounging below, or stretching out to sunbathe on deck, there is plenty of room for your group of six.”
In addition to the traditional cruises, guests can also opt to add an afternoon of exploring historic Power Island. This 200-acre gem, located in the heart of Grand Traverse Bay, offers three miles of waterfront and five miles of hiking trails, open to the public. Other popular activities include picnicking, sunbathing and rock hunting – specifically searching for Michigan’s famed Petoskey Stones.
For added romance, Scout is available for a special dockside overnight experience. This evening includes a three hour sunset sail, after which the vessel is docked in Center Pointe Marina and the crew departs, leaving you alone to enjoy quiet time alone. Scout can accommodate up to four (4) people in two cozy double cabins. The boat also offers a head (bathroom) and shower, and guests are given access to the marina bath facilities and lounge. Other on-board amenities include a flat screen TV with DVD player, stereo system and full galley (kitchen) including a refrigerator (stocked with soft drinks).
Special cruising opportunities are being offered in conjunction with the National Cherry Festival:
* June 29 (12:30-5pm) — Cherry Festival Air Show Viewing & Sail ($650)
Cruise the bay under sail, after which Scout will anchor so you can enjoy the best seats in the house to view the spectacular air show!
* June 29 (7pm-11:30pm) — Night Time Air Show Viewing and Sail ($700)
Enjoy a sunset cruise followed by a unique night time air show, viewed from Scout’s anchorage on the bay!
* July 4 (7-11:30pm) — Sunset Sail and Fireworks Viewing ($700)
Celebrate the 4th in comfort and style! Scout will cruise the bay until sunset and then will anchor in a prime fireworks viewing location and enjoy the show!
* July 6 (7-11:30pm) — Sunset Sail and Fireworks Viewing ($700)
This display marks the end of the National Cherry Festival! Scout will cruise the bay until sunset and then will anchor in a prime fireworks viewing location and enjoy the show!
Guests are invited to bring their own refreshments or choose from the company’s catering menu (for an additional charge). All alcoholic beverages are BYOB, however soft drinks and snacks are provided at no charge.
The cost for the three hour cruise is $400 with additional hours added at $100 per hour; the Power Island trip (running six to seven hours) is $900; the overnight package – including the three hour sunset sail – is $700 based on double occupancy (up to two (2) additional guests for $50 per person). An overnight option – excluding the sunset sail – is also available for $350.
Since 1987, Traverse Tall Ship Company has been offering sailing adventures on the freshwater Grand Traverse Bay – and beyond, into Northern Lake Michigan. In addition to Scout, the company proudly sails Manitou – one of the largest sailing ships on the Great Lakes. A replica of an 1800s “coasting” cargo schooner, this traditional two-masted, gaff rigged, topsail schooner, measures 114 feet in length with more than 3000 square feet of sail, and can accommodate 59 passengers (24 overnight capacity).
Traverse Tall Ship Company is located at 13258 S.W. Bay Shore Drive (M22) in Traverse City and shares a dock with the fleet from the Maritime Heritage Alliance, creating a unique nautical experience for the area.
To make reservations for any of the 2013 Scout or Manitou sailing adventures, call toll free 800-678-0383. Gift certificates are also available. For additional information about Scout or Manitou, including corporate charters, log on to www.TallShipSailing.com.

South Haven Family Campground to Double in Size
A major expansion is underway at South Haven Family Campground meaning more family fun for West Michigan campers and outdoor recreationalists. The expansion nearly doubles the offerings and amenities at the campground, which sits on 50 acres just ¼ a mile from the Kal Haven Trail and 5.5 miles east of the sandy shores of Lake Michigan.
“We are so excited and yet overwhelmed with the growth this year,” says Susan Novotny, who owns the park with her husband, Kyle. They purchased the land in 1999, opening their main building in 2007 and the campground in 2008. “We started to camp as a family when our oldest was six months old,” Susan says. “Now, our children – Katie and Kylie – are in college, yet we still share in the joy of camping together.”
Currently, the campground offers 37 sites, five cabins and one cottage, as well as a camp store, restroom facilities, dump station, laundry facilities, game room, “Triple K” Raceway and Camp “Grounds” Espresso Bar and CafĂ©.
The expansion adds to that 33 water and electric sites, three cabins, two park models, a 40x120 pavilion and pet park area. Special attractions will also include a jumping pillow, water-wars feature and several new bikes for campers to rent. All cabins are outfitted with Keurig coffee makers and a new security gate is also being installed.
Renting cabins at South Haven Family Campground start at $64 per night up to $159 per night, depending on the amenities. Two of the cabins have outdoor hot tubs, which means they usually are rented first.
Families enjoy unlimited activities at South Haven Family Campground, with themed weekends – including the September 28 Halloween Spooktacular and the “Everything Chocolate” Weekend with a chocolate slip-n-slide, chocolate pudding wrestling, chocolate milk guzzling (out of a baby bottle) and other planned activities. Craft projects and events like outdoor movies, are also offered throughout the summer.
South Haven Family campground is open April 15 through October 30 each year. It has been one of the “A” rated parks for the fourth year in a row for customer service on GuestRated.com. Only 44 parks nationwide were given this honor in 2011.
